Cell phone calls should be a personal affair.

It doesn’t matter if it is a business associate or your closest friend on the other line, do not subject others to your dirty laundry.  Keep your voice down and try to find a low-key location if you must speak in public places, like a street or restaurant.  It amazes me how loud people can be when talking on the phone out in public, which just screams, “Hey, I’m super needy and want everyone to know I exist.”

Be courteous to both friends and strangers alike by not forcing them to hear the details of your break-up or business negotiations.  Move to a different spot, or don’t talk at that time.  Really, we’re just not that into you.

Also, please say, “Excuse me,” if you must take a call in front of others.  People just answer there phones now even though they may have been mid-sentence with a friend or family member at a restaurant.  Show courtesy to the person you are with by pardoning yourself first.  But better yet, show the person you are with that they are truly important by silencing your phone and letting the call go to voicemail.

Facebook is a great platform for promotion and connecting with others. In business, you cannot ignore this force. Facebook reports that there are now over 1 billion active users each month. This is a huge opportunity, but you need to keep in mind WHY people use Facebook.

First, people thrive off the chance to spotlight their “identity.” I am putting that in quotes because what people showcase is the brightest and shiniest version of themselves. Facebook is a venue for incredible self expression, but it is a combination of who a person is and how that person wants to be perceived.

There was actually an interesting article about how Facebook can make some people depressed because it mostly exposes a user to all the great things that are happening in the lives of others, which can make some people feel like losers compared to these brightest and shiniest versions of others. These depressed individuals were not able to realize how Facebook can distort reality, but I digress . . .

With this desire to self express and create an identity, people take great care in selecting what groups to join, pages to “like” and photos to tag. Each action is a part of this online self.

People also use Facebook to connect to others.

Now, it is critical to view your presence on Facebook with these motivations in mind. You need to present yourself, your product, or your service in a way that will entice people to want to make you part of their identity.

This drives me crazy!  Too often people are substituting social media sites for websites.  Facebook is fine if you just need a page for a group of people to talk and share a hobby.  However, if you want to be taken seriously, and you are interested in being a business, then you need your own website.

For one thing, you will own your content.  People may decide that they hate Google+ or LinkedIn tomorrow, and migrate to the latest and greatest interface.  Where is all your content then?  We have already seen this happen with Facebook and Instagram.

Plus, there are so many more possibilities available to you with your own website.  There is incredible freedom to control your content, but just connect it to social media platforms.  You write once and it instantly populates social media accounts.

There is NO social media platform substitution for the professionalism that is reflected by a real website.  It shows your attention to detail and commitment to your product or service.  If you are serious about social media marketing, then make sure you have a website.
